Dr. Thomas Bobo graduated from the University of Alabama in 1958 with a degree to teach history. Originally from Fayette County in north Alabama, Bobo took a job in Montgomery at Capitol Height junior high school at a time when the schools were segregated by race. After about ten years as a teacher, he was tapped to do the work of integrating Montgomeryís public schools in the late 1960s when it could no longer be avoided through appeals and half efforts. Along with Thelma Smiley Morris, the African-American educator assigned to work with him, they went about the unpopular task of mixing the races in Montgomeryís public schools.
On March 31, 2005, Dr. Thomas Bobo came to BTWís Creative Writing class to speak to students. From behind a podium, with his notes well prepared in classic educator style, he gave the students a lesson in history using his own first-hand experiences.
